Outdoor Fitness Area

In 2023, the Itasca County Family YMCA received funding through the State of Minnesota Age-Friendly Minnesota Community Grant Program to create an outdoor fitness area designed to promote health, movement, and connection in our community. The project transformed outdoor space along the YMCA's walking path into an accessible fitness opportunity where community members can be active outdoors.

The project was created with older adults and accessibility in mind while providing a welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities. The outdoor fitness equipment is located in a public space and is available for community use (no membership required), helping remove financial barriers to physical activity while encouraging people to stay active and socially connected.

The project reflects the goals of Age-Friendly Minnesota to create outdoor spaces that are safe, inviting, and usable by people of all ages and abilities. The grant program specifically identified outdoor fitness equipment and gathering spaces that encourage physical activity and socialization as examples of age-friendly community improvements.

Come check it out! Watch the video below for a look at the outdoor fitness equipment and consider stopping by the YMCA to enjoy this free community resource.
